My Ribena Plant

Some time ago, my aunt and cousins went to Ipoh and brought back some ribena ruits. They gave me some and asked me to plant them in my planter. Now the plants are growing up and I saw my first ribena fruit!

The last time my aunt boiled the ribena fruits with sugar, it tasted really good. Just like the ribena drink but with a stronger aroma of the berries. I hope I can make my own ribena drink with the fruits from my planter soon! :)

Hello, great to read about your ribena plant. It definitely inspires me to grow one too as the fresh drink made out of it looks so yummy in your picture. It is healthier than the bottled syrup type selling in supermarket, I’m sure. Hopefully local nursery can start to sell these plants/seeds soon.

Hi! The pictures look great and congratulations on having such a healthy crop! I’m kinda confused though as the traditional ‘Ribena’ is a brand name and the drink is made from blackcurrents. Do you happen to know what is the actual name of your fruit? Just curious to know!:)

It is Hibiscus sabdariffa (Roselle). Some Community Gardens in Singapore grow it.

Not only can you have homemade ribena drink, you can try to make your own ribena jam :) My grandmom used to do that when she grew them in her garden. Sadly the plants were gone for many years and I wonder where we could grown these ribena plant again.

Hi, to make the ribena drink, you take out the red petals from the fruits, rinse and boil it with rock sugar (some people put pandan as well but I think that takes away the ribena smell). Can see this link for details

    Hi Simon,

I went to the festival but did not notice any Roselles. Anyway, my friend brought the fruits from NTUC and she gave me 2 to plant. I’m not sure whether it will grow. Do you know how long it will take?
