Singapore Celebrates IYB2010 | The Orchid Conservation Fund | What’s On - Events | Deals for you
IYB2010

Do you know that Singapore is home to the largest orchid plant in the world, the Grammatophyllum speciosum 虎兰 (Tiger Orchid) ?

Also known as tiger orchid for its markings which resemble the skin of a tiger, this orchid is extremely rare if not already extinct in the wild in Singapore. The orchid was last found in the wild in Tuas and Pulau Ubin. Since a mature plant could weigh more than a ton, it is a wonder that such a huge plant could live on the trunk of a tree.

As part of NParks' orchid conservation and reintroduction programme, the tiger orchid has been planted at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Pulau Ubin, Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Bukit Batok Nature Park, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Labrador Park, Tiong Bahru Park, Kent Ridge Park, Sembawang Park, Woodlands Town Garden, Telok Blangah Hill Park, Orchard Boulevard, Holland Road and Mandai Road.

Orchid Conservation Fund

The Orchid Conservation Fund is started by the Garden City Fund, NParks’ registered charity and IPC (Institute of Public Character), to raise some $250,000 to help conserve our native orchids.

Contributions will be used to propagate and reintroduce rare and endangered orchid species back into the roads, parks and nature areas.

Over time, these orchids should regenerate on their own.

The Fund will be used to support the following:
• Monitoring of existing orchid species
• Exploring ways to conserve them
• Increasing their numbers through subsequent reintroduction into appropriate habitats
• Research and education

Those who are keen to contribute to the Fund can make their donations at www.gardencityfund.org.
