IYB2010

Did you know that the "Attap Chee" we eat comes from the Nipah Palm (Nypa fruticans)?

The Nipah Palm is one of the few palms that can grow well in mangroves. It grows in soft mud and where there is calmer brackish water. Its fruit forms into a large ball about the size and shape of a soccer ball. It is also the mangrove plant with the oldest known fossil, with pollen dated 70 million years old.

Some of the places you can see this palm are, Chek Jawa Wetlands, Pulau Ubin and at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. Humans have used this palm for many purposes:

  • Its seeds are made into the sweet preserved "attap chee".

  • The inflorescences are tapped for sugar and alcohol.

  • The petals of the flowers can be brewed into an aromatic tea.

  • The leaves are used for thatching (attap in Malay), as cigarette papers and fishing floats.
