Visitor Info

Formerly a cowshed, the building that is now the Wallace Education Centre was restored and now houses the Wallace Environmental Learning Lab (WELL), and an interpretative centre where visitors can learn about the changing landscapes of Dairy Farm and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve through various exhibits.

Established by NParks and Raffles Girls' Secondary School, WELL is a holistic programme where primary and secondary school students will be able to discover Singapore's natural heritage through interesting hands-on activities.

With materials developed by Raffles Girls' Secondary School, teachers will be able to self-conduct various educational programmes from half day workshops to overnight learning camps. This is the first time that such programmes are offered in parks. WELL will enable students to explore the trails of Dairy Farm, and conduct research such as water, soil, rock, and insect studies, and carry out data analysis at the Lab.

The Wallace Education Centre, WELL, and the Wallace Trail have all been named after Alfred Wallace, to honour his contributions to natural science. A contemporary of Charles Darwin, Wallace is the other "father" behind the theory of evolution. Wallace had stopped over in Singapore in 1854 during his journeys to the Malay Archipelago, and collected many species of beetles in the vicinity of the Dairy Farm site.

At the south-western end of the park lies the Singapore Quarry, which now offers visitors a tranquil setting with a scenic view. In a short time, the transformation of the site into a wetland has attracted many fauna, including the Little Grebe, a critically endangered bird that was known to be found only in Lorong Halus, as well as many species of dragonflies, many of which are rare.

I love the new Dairy Farm Nature Park and Wallace Education Centre. To think this site might just have so easily become yet another property development! Kudos to NParks for preserving it for posterity. Now, our younger generation, and us older ones too, can enjoy yet another great, nature park in Singapore. Wallace Education Centre (WEC)is brilliant in helping to preserve our place in Natural History in the world. WEC has great potential for more learning - how about a milking demonstration some day (a tie up with a local dairy?). Also, the currrently unused "cottage' near WEC would make a great, niche, restaurant? It would be very romantic, or it would make a great cooking school! Let it grow some herbs. vegetables in the garden! Let's have a Dairy Farm Nature Park brochure soon (yes, I know it is not as enviromentally friendly but I think it is needed to help people orientate better around the park). Of course, more can be done/teething problems resolved, etc but, the bottom line from me, is WELL DONE, NParks!

Took a walk and have the following comments: - Car Park A and B are build without any planning for larger plants, it's hot and not advisable to go from 11am to 4 pm, I would follow some smart drivers and park along the road next to MOE Adventure Centre. - Wallace Trail is interesting but too narrow like most of the trails in the nature reserve, suggest some simple standard. Can't immagine how enthusiasts will enjoy the walk when there are people walking behind you, towards you, and stopping to make clicks. Perhaps directional signs will help - logs are placed very close to one another along the trail making the flow of water difficult during rain and it is wet and muddy, not very nice and track shoe is a must. Plan according to the elements and senarios please. - The simple trail from MOE Advanture centre to Wallace Education centre is not as interesting and as the surounding trails, but these should be improved for hikers, in particular the biking Dariy Farm Pass trail. It's dangerous to walk during weekends as there are fast bikers and I often jump aside to avoid them. Great if improvement can be made. - Must try the Dairy Farm Pass after Wallace Trail as it is most interesting, in particular the steep hillside for rock climers and when you are suddenly welcome to a large field with many birds and wild lifes, walk to the end and turn around and shout "Come to me" and some one will shout back "Come to me". - Don't be supprised if you have difficulty in gettng back using the park map. There is a wide paved track just before MOE Advanture Centre but when you walk towards it there is a barrier with very mean warning of intrusion and No directional signage. Like all Singaporean, I turned back and had to take a very long route to get back. There is another Loop but signage are for bikers and if you missed that again you may end up at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and take a taxi back. - enjoy, as I did but don't be too demanding, we are getting there, in time.
