Handkerchief Trees

banner-01

Handkerchief Trees are a variety of species with prominent light green leaf flushes (the simultaneous production of new leaves) hanging loosely from the ends of branches. They may also have showy creamy bracts (modified leaves) which surround the flowers. The flushes and bracts look like handkerchiefs being hung out to dry, hence the common name for these trees. Such trees are usually planted for their aesthetic value, but their flowers also play an important role in attracting biodiversity.

The various species, such as the Maniltoa and Saraca, inject different colours into the garden and usually flower after bouts of dry weather.
