The magpie robin is a beautiful singing bird. Is there any interest in increasing the numbers here. Maybe an expert on this bird can do a project. I live in the Clementi area since 2009. For the first time this year I could hear Robin Magpies singing . After a couple of months they “disappeared” until last week when a “new” one appeared. Incidentally is this bird protected in Singapore ?

Magpie Robins are protected throughout Singapore, under the Parks and Trees Act (which covers all areas managed by NParks including nature reserves, parks, and roadside greenery) and the Wild Animals and Birds Act (which covers everywhere else. NParks has had some success in providing nest sites for Magpie Robins, using an empty metal biscuit tin, nailed side-on to a pole (so that the tin opening is at the side, not on top). However, its success depends on Magpie Robins being already present, and the area having suitable vegetation (typically a mixture of lawns, gardens and trees). We are alert to the possibility of poaching, as these are popular songbirds, and anyone seeing trapping in progress should alert AVA (anywhere in Singapore) or NParks (if the site is in a nature reserve or park).
