Elephant Fern

The Elephant Fern (Angiopteris evecta) consists of a short, fleshy stem that bears many leaves at the tip. These leaves are massive fronds that can grow to about 300 by 200 cm! Even its leaflets are ‘elephant-sized’, measuring around 100 centimetres or longer. It is a native plant and grows along shaded streams in primary forests as well as on hills up to 1,2000 m altitude. This large, attractive fern is often used as an ornamental plant, where it can serve as a centrepiece of a landscape design because of its size.
