In this issue, we are giving away five Singapore Botanic Gardens’ “Learning Forest Motif” Cutlery-on-the-go sets. Contest Issue 44

Highlights

The start of a new year fills me with mixed emotions. Part of me wants to hold onto the year past with recent experiences still lingering, but the other part of me is curious about what lies ahead. What new adventures beckon?

In this issue, we have a bit of the old and a bit of the new. We take a peek into Singapore’s past by getting an update on three archaeological surveys conducted on Pulau Ubin before exploring the recently opened OCBC Arboretum at the Gallop Extension at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

On the conservation front, two of the biggest news stories in 2019 were the seizures of smuggled pangolin scales and elephant ivory by Singapore authorities. Both stories highlighted the importance of working with international partners to tackle this crime. Learn more about the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna, also known as CITES, in this issue.

In the new year, are you considering adding a furry friend to the family? Before making this decision, get some advice from current pet owners as well as a volunteer with the Animal & Veterinary Service. They all understand the importance of being a responsible pet owner, and you should do, before getting your pet. Read the articles, “Me and My Pet Pal” and “Caring For Pets and their Owners,” for their insights.

This new year also marks the beginning of a new decade which is even more reason to get excited by whatever lies ahead. So I say, it’s time to bid farewell to yesterday and embrace new beginnings. May the next 12 months give you 2020 vision!
