The Orchid Breeding Programme at the Singapore Botanic Gardens – Past, Present and Future

The Orchid Breeding programme in the Singapore Botanic Gardens traces its history back to the late 1920s. After being introduced to the Knudson method of asymbiotic germination of orchid seeds by Hans Burgeff, Eric Holttum (Director from 1926 - 1949) initiated the orchid hybridisation programme His first hybrid, Spathoglottis Primrose (S. aurea x S. plicata), flowered in 1931. After much experimentation, the resultant free-flowering orchid hybrids stimulated a thriving orchid industry and Singapore’s orchid export trade was born. Over the course of its history, the Gardens has produced many significant orchid hybrids. To date, the Gardens has registered over 550 Gardens hybrids with the International Registration Authority for Orchid Hybrids administered by the Royal Horticultural Society. Besides the conventional breeding method, we create new hybrids by artificial induction of polyploidy. We also create hybrids with parent species that have seldom been used for breeding. These hybrids possess unique characteristics which may lead to new and exciting breeding possibilities.

Tropical orchids are more often epiphytes which grow non-parasitically on trees, some 20% are terrestrials and lithophytes living on rocks crevices and cliffs. Creating the Perfect Match – Orchid Breeding in Singapore Botanic Gardens

Orchids have been closely associated with Singapore Botanic Gardens since its establishment in 1859. The Gardens' orchid breeding programme began in the late 1920s, and many outstanding tropical orchid hybrids were created, and played a significant role in the development of Singapore’s orchid industry. The devotion, passion and hard work of the Gardens’ orchid pioneers had helped to put our orchids on the world map and till today, many of the Gardens’ early hybrids still remain as popular cut flowers both locally and overseas.

The Gardens’ orchid hybrids also play an important role in Singapore’s international relations. The naming of orchids after visiting foreign Head of States and dignitaries promote good will and closer ties between Singapore and other nations.
