Where Art and Nature Meet

The Singapore Botanic Gardens is a great place to be surrounded by the wonders of nature. But did you know that you can also enjoy soaking in some art while you are in the Gardens?

After exploring the sights and sounds of the Gardens, be sure to take a trip to the Botanical Art Gallery, situated within one of the Gardens’ black and white colonial houses, located at the Gallop Extension. This Gallery, with a collection of more than 2,000 botanical paintings, highlights the vital role art plays in the scientific documentation of plants in Singapore and the region. This is also the first permanent display of botanical art in Singapore.

A visit there is a great way to appreciate our diverse array of botanical illustrations and will surely bring your day to a happy close.

These prints of intricate watercolour illustrations were painted in 1894 by James and Charles de Alwis, who hailed from a notable lineage of botanical illustrators. Designs by British artist Jean Kinloch Smith, painted in 1949, are also featured in this series. These works are now on display in the Gallery as some of the best and most representative selections of the Singapore Botanical Gardens’ collections.
