It was just last December, when the National Parks Board (NParks) celebrated its inaugural Volunteers Appreciation Day. Thus it is fitting for us to reflect upon how far the volunteer programme has come since the early days in the 1990s.

During my childhood, I always had fun spending time with my family in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Strangely, I don't remember ever eating at the Gardens! That's why I was quite excited about heading to the Gardens with my friends - this time, to eat at the newly-opened Food Canopy, and yes, to fill the gap in my childhood.

This year, 2013, marks 50 years of the greening of Singapore! The City in a Garden that you enjoy today, with its vibrant parks, lush tree-lined roads, and thriving biodiversity is the result of the dedication and commitment of many people to enhance the quality of our living spaces.
