Facts

Our City in a Garden owes a great debt to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, who, more than 50 years ago, started our country on its greening campaign. The fact that we can take shelter under broad shady trees, enjoy listening to birds, and admire butterflies among flowers, is all due to Mr Lee believing in the importance of greenery.

He made greening Singapore a priority not just because it drew foreign investment into a newly independent country with few resources, but also because he felt that greenery was essential for the well-being of the people. He also felt strongly that everyone, regardless of status, should be able to equally enjoy our parks, gardens and other green spaces. For these reasons and more, Mr Lee made greenery a crucial part of our country’s infrastructure and culture.

To honour Mr Lee’s contribution to our little green dot, the Singapore Botanic Gardens recently named a beautiful orchid after him. The Aranda Lee Kuan Yew is a vigorous and robust new hybrid with greenish golden-yellow sepals and petals. Read more here for more information on the orchid.

Our city-state today is very different from what it was in 1965. Lush greenery, flourishing biodiversity, none of this would have been possible if not for Mr Lee’s vision and commitment to creating the best possible living environment for all Singaporeans to enjoy. For some anecdotes of what he did or how personal an interest he took in the greening of our country, we have some videos available online here and here.

Thus let us all work together to continue Mr Lee’s work by making Singapore an even more verdant City in a Garden.
