Botanical Illustrations by Waiwai Hove from the Garden of Miss Joaquim Collection

The Garden of Miss Joaquim collection featured in this showcase was a recent commission by children’s book author, Linda Locke, who is also the great-grandniece of Agnes Joaquim and has taken a keen interest in tracing her great-grandaunt’s numerous horticultural accolades. Linda’s first publication was Agnes and her Amazing Orchid in 2018, recounting her great-grandaunt’s story.

The collection consists of 44 botanical illustrations of fruits, flowers, plants, spices, and vegetables, commonly grown by horticulturists, and submitted to flower shows in the 19th century. These plants are believed to be the likely species that Agnes Joaquim grew and garnered awards for in the annual Flower Shows; these accolades were documented in the local newspapers.

Waiwai Hove is a botanical illustrator, a diploma graduate from the Society of Botanical Artists (UK) and has illustrated numerous botanical specimens for the Singapore Botanic Gardens in the last decade. Her works feature on the cover of The Flora of Singapore, the Gardens’ 2019 calendar (ginger family flora) and a Singapore Post stamp issue in 2018. (IG : @waiwaihove )
