This year’s edition of the Singapore Botanic Gardens Heritage Festival is held in conjunction with the Singapore Garden Festival (SGF).
From 30 July to 9 August 2022, the Gardens will bring you through a heritage journey with activities such as concerts, guided tours, DIY trails and virtual activities! Join us in fun-filled programmes curated to celebrate the Gardens' rich heritage.

Arts@SBG presents NAC-ExxonMobil Concert in the Gardens

Come and celebrate Singapore Botanic Gardens’ Heritage Festival with an evening of music! Singapore's most celebrated classical string ensemble, the T'ang Quartet, will perform at the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage featuring familiar classics - excerpts from works of beauty and refinement by great composers such as Mozart, Haydn, Borodin, Brahms, Bizet and more.
The concert is part of the Arts@SBG NAC-ExxonMobil Concert in the Gardens series. Singapore Botanic Gardens is a part of the National Arts Council’s Arts and Culture Nodes Network.

Heritage Tour

For over 160 years, Singapore Botanic Gardens has been the birthplace of Southeast Asia's rubber and orchid industries. A walk through Tanglin / Heritage Core of the Gardens will evoke memories of bygone days where ladies stroll through the Gardens with the parasols and long skirts. Highlights of the tour include the Bandstand, sculptures in the Gardens, Heritage Trees, the Main Gate, and the Saraca Stream Walk.

Join us for a one hour guided tour of the Botanical Art Gallery, which showcases Singapore’s first permanent display of botanical art. Learn about the vital role that art plays in the scientific documentation of plants in Singapore and the region, as well as how art can inspire renewed appreciation of the natural world around us.

Race Against Time - Science Behind a Botanic Garden Tour
31 July & 7 August 2022 | 9am | Visitor Services Counter at Tanglin Gate This session introduces the research facilities at the Singapore Botanic Gardens such as the Library of Botany & Horticulture, Orchid & Micro-propagation laboratory and the Herbarium. One of the highlights of this 45-minute tour is a visit to the Herbarium which stores physical records of reference plant materials, some dating as far back as 1790. In addition, learn about our hybridization programme for orchids, a process introduced back in 1930’s by the then Director, R.E Holttum.

SBG Heritage Museum + CDL Green Gallery Exhibition Tour

Join us for a one hour guided tour of the SBG Heritage Museum and CDL Green Gallery. The SBG Heritage Museum features interactive and multimedia exhibits and panels that detail the Gardens' rich heritage. While the CDL Green Gallery, an extension of the Heritage Museum, currently showcaseshow Singapore has been working to mitigate the effects of urbanisation and climate change, and how everyone has a part to play in building ocean resilience.

Healing Garden Tour

The Healing Garden showcases over 400 varieties of plants used medicinally. It is laid out thematically relating to component parts of the body such as head, respiratory and reproductive systems. Spread over 2.5 hectares, this garden is designed as a tranquil retreat with medical plants traditionally used in Southeast Asia as the main focus.

Gallop Extension Tour

Join us for a one hour guided walk through the Gallop Extension of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The tour begins at the Visitor Centre at Gallop, and will take you through the OCBC Arboretum, viewing the dipterocarp collection. You will also experience the Mingxin Foundation Rambler’s Ridge, Forest Discovery Centre @ OCBC Arboretum and the Botanical Art Gallery.

Flower Obsession: The Curator Talks

Join Dr Michele Rodda, curator of Flower Obsession: Plant Collecting in East Asia, 1600s–1900sin the second session of The Curator Talks series. This talk will focus on kihin, the Japanese term for plants which were sought after for their unusual characteristics such as variegated leaves. Kihin became very popular in the Edo period (1603–1868), leading to the production of numerous illustrated books, targeted mainly at collectors. These include large encyclopaedic works, cultivation manuals as well as books specialised on single species such as Rohdea japonica or Ipomoea nil.

Singapore Botanic Gardens Heritage Museum

The SBG Heritage Museum features interactive and multimedia exhibits and panels that detail the Gardens’ rich heritage. Historical items that will be displayed include old photographs, artefacts, plant specimens, rare botanical books and botanical paintings that date back to the early 19thcentury. Oral recordings of Ridley during his 100thbirthday will also be integrated into an interactive display. The exhibits in the Museum are supported by CDL through the Garden City Fund, a registered charity and institution of public character established by the National Parks Board.

The Forest Discovery Centre @ OCBC Arboretum showcases the forest ecosystems in Singapore and highlights the importance of conserving them through a series of interpretive and interactive displays. Visitors can enjoy a bird’s eye view of Singapore’s diverse forests and the Gardens’ historical role in conserving them through a photographic installation of forest trees found in various local habitats.

Flower Obsession: Plant Collecting in East Asia, 1600s–1900s

Flower Obsession: Plant Collecting in East Asia, 1600s–1900sis the first exhibition at the Botanical Art Gallery to feature artworks from two important overseas institutions: Higashiyama Botanical Gardens and the private Soukaen Bunko (Nagoya, Japan). The exhibition includes about 100 items including printed books, manuscripts and photographs dating from the late 1600s to the early 1900s, many of which have not been exhibited outside Japan before.

Home: Made with Plants

‘Home: Made with Plants’ invites visitors to rediscover their relationship with plants and communities across the region, from past to present, while reflecting on what ‘home’ means to them. It houses stories from the community about personal and cultural connections with plants commonly found in and around homes across Southeast Asia. This exhibition is a collaboration between SBG’s Centre for Ethnobotany and ground-up initiative SayurStory, co-created by migrant domestic workers in Singapore. Visit its virtual living room here!

The Singapore Botanic Gardens Seed Bank is a conservation, research and education facility in the Singapore Botanic Gardens that focuses on conserving plant species by preserving the seeds and germplasm of plants in Southeast Asia. The Seed Bank has an interpretive gallery that introduces the Seed Bank and explains its importance to plant conservation and research in Singapore and the region, as well as a seed dispersal garden with seed sculptures showing the different seed dispersal mechanisms.

Seen thousands of times, the seemingly ordinary sights of Singapore’s parks hide stories that are waiting to be told. Artist mother-daughter duo Inessa & Alice Kalabekova, love to explore nature, taking paths less travelled, soaking in the sights, smells and sounds, and making up their own stories about the seen and the unseen.
This exhibition is an attempt to tell these stories set in the Singapore Botanic Gardens, through the whimsical worlds of Inessa’s visuals and Alice’s words. Bamboos, rustic benches, butterflies, and water lilies… you won’t be able to see them the same way again.
