Sustainable Landscape Design and Evaluation

In today's environment of change and uncertainty around our climate and global warming, loss of habitat and biodiversity, water and food issues and our constant need and desire for natural resources, it is time we look at how we approach traditional landscape and garden construction. Sustainable gardens and landscapes are about designing our open spaces in a way that maximises the positive benefits that gardens have on the environment while minimising the negative impacts.

Most gardens and landscapes especially urban landscapes require a vast amount of resources that require inputs of energy, water, nutrients and chemicals. Our methods around plant choices have also come at a cost with the implementation of species not suited to environments resulting in the high input of resources to sustain this practice and ensure their survival.

The outcomes of this workshop will provide a thorough understanding of the principles and practices of sustainable gardens and landscapes. Participants will understand how to create beautiful and sustainable gardens through the conservation of water, soil health, use of plants, encouraging biodiversity, food production, minimising the reliance on chemicals, understanding natural resources and how to better work and design with all these elements.

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Understand the principles of sustainable landscape design, gardens and landscapes

2. Design a garden, landscape or park using sustainable landscape principles and techniques

3. Evaluate a garden to identify sustainable landscape design principles

4. Develop a sustainable landscape evaluation tool to assist in evaluating projects
