CUGE-ARB-3032 Soils and Tree Roots: Principles and PracticesINTRODUCTION
Soil give a tree's root system five critical requirements: oxygen, water, nutrients, space to explore and anchorage. Soil compaction through human and livestock activities is detrimental to all of these and thus to tree health. Through the course, participants will be taught the functions and requirements of tree root systems, how to consider tree root systems when planning soil works for existing trees, design functional engineered soil systems for urban trees and understand how to estimate tree root volume requirements.
The course covers:
- Basic soil pedology and soil morphology
- Recognising and understanding the importance of soil texture, colour and profile form
- Functions of tree root systems
- Rules for tree works, engineered urban tree soils, and estimating tree rooting volumes

ABOUT THE TRAINER
Mr Simon Leake is the founder and principal consultant of Sydney Environmental & Soil Laboratory (SESL). He is the author of the award winning book "Soils for Landscape Development", and has more than 30 years of experience as a practising urban soil scientist. Simon is a trainer and lecturer in soil sciences at universities and colleges.
