CUGE-PGRD-0002 Playground Maintenance Technician CourseINTRODUCTION
This programme is designed to provide a systematic approach to maintaining playgrounds. It also serves as intermediary training for less experienced personnel prior to sitting for the more comprehensive Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) program. This two–day program is the first of its kind, using classroom facilitation and virtual animation to help bring the playground into the classroom. This course is developed by the Park District Risk Management Agency (PDRMA) USA and is the most comprehensive training program on playground maintenance and inspection and includes other new industry risk management methods developed specifically for this program. The course is accredited with the Clemson University Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, USA.
This course aims to provide with participants the essential knowledge on playground maintenance, comprehensive and up–to–date training on playground safety as well as certification for playground safety inspectors by the National Recreation and Park Association, United States of America.

ABOUT THE TRAINER
Ken is an independent consultant in the area of safety specializing in play spaces for children. Ken received his B.S. in Public Park and Recreation Administration from Western Illinois University. He is a Certified Park and Recreation Professional and a Certified Playground Safety Inspector with more than 35 years of full-time experience in all aspects of public park operations management. He chaired his agency’s Safety Committee from 1984 until retiring in 2006.
Ken is an active member of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association and the National Recreation and Park Association. He has served on the; IPRA Board of Directors, chaired the IPRA Park and Natural Resource Management Section, chaired the NRPA Great Lakes Regional Council, the NRPA National Forum, served on the NRPA Board of Trustees, and was President of the NRPA in 1995. Ken is co-founder of the NRPA National Playground Safety Institute. He has also been a PMT trainer since the program started in 2011.
Tom has been in the Park, Recreation and Conservation field for over 40 years. He has worked for 5 public agencies in Illinois. He is currently the Executive Director of the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District, a county wide open space agency with over 10,000 acres of property in Northern Illinois.
He is a Certified Park and Recreation Professional, (CPRP), a Certified Playground Safety Inspector and Instructor ( CPSI) and Past Chair of the National Playground Safety Institute. He has been an instructor of the CPSI Program and has taught over 150 classes nationally and internationally. He is a member of the National Recreation and Park Association, (NRPA). He is also an active member of the American Society of Testing and Materials, International (ASTM) since 1988. He is also one of only 3 instructors of this newly developed training program for maintaining playground equipment and surfacing, called the “Playground Maintenance Technician” (PMT) Program, the first of its kind in the United States.
