CUGE-SOIL-3002 Biochar - An Effective Soil Amendment for Urban Soils and Tree Growth

Biochar is an effective soil amendment material used for urban soils and tree growth. Recently, biochar has been promoted as a valuable soil amendment material for its capacity to improve soil functions, sequester additional soil carbon and mitigate greehouse gas emissions. However, ther is a lack of information regarding the effects of biochar amendments on soil and plants in tropical urban environment. 

The course is intended to inform participants how and why biochar is a valuable soil amendment material that can be used to improve soil and plant growth in our tropical urban environments. the course will also explain how and why biochar is a simple yet powerful tool for combating climate change.

Dr. Subhadip Ghosh is an urban soil senior researcher at the Centre for Urban Greenery and Ecology (CUGE), National Parks Board, Singapore. He won a national scholarship and holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Honours) from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, a state agricultural university in India, as well as a Master's in Soil Science from Punjab Agricultural University. He completed his Ph.D. from the University of New England, Armidale, Australia and post-doctoral research with Primary Industries and Innovation Centre, New South Wales (NSW), Australia.

Dr. Ghosh has published more than 60 scientific articles. He is an adjunct lecturer at the University of New England, NSW, Australia. His major fields of research interests are environmental soil science, soil quality, carbon sequestration and land-use change, biochar studies, nutrient dynamics, and management of urban and peri-urban soils.
