OVERVIEW

Soil give a tree's root system five critical requirements: oxygen, water, nutrients, space to explore and anchorage. Soil compaction through human and livestock activities is detrimental to all of these and thus to tree health. Through the course, participants will be taught the functions and requirements of tree root systems, how to consider tree root systems when planning soil works for existing trees, design functional engineered soil systems for urban trees and understand how to estimate tree root volume requirements.

COURSE OVERVIEW

  • Basic soil pedology and soil morphology
  • Recognising and understanding the importance of soil texture, colour and profile form
  • Functions of tree root systems
  • Rules for tree works, engineered urban tree soils, and estimating tree rooting volumes
