Chambeyronia macrocarpa, also known as New Caledonia Palm, is an ornamental palm endemic to New Caledonia. It has a solitary habit and can reach up to 15 m tall. Young leaves are often reddish, and slowly turn green when mature.

Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a palm, about 15 m tall.
Foliage Leaves can reach about 2.1 - 4 m long. Each leaf has 37 - 40 widely spaced linear-oblong leaflets on each side. Leaflets are leathery, and have a prominent mid rib with 2 lateral veins, which gives a pleated appearance. Young leaves are often reddish, and slowly turn green when mature. The petiole is about 12.5 to 45 cm.
Crown Shaft The crownshaft is 1.15 – 1.2 m long, green to blue-green in colour.
Flowers The inflorescence is about 80 - 100 cm long and occur beneath the crownshaft. It comprises of cream flowers, sometimes with a pale pink flush. Male flower comprises of many stamens (40 - 48).
Fruit The fruits are round or egg shaped (about 3.8 - 4.6 cm long and 2.4 - 2.6 cm wide), hangs on a branch like a pendent, and become deep red coloured when mature.  Each fruit contains one seed within.
Habitat It is found in rainforest and sometimes near streams, up to 1000 m altitude.
Etymology The genus is named after Charles Marie Léon Chambeyron (1827 - 1891), a French naval officer and hydrographer, who mapped most of the coast of New Caledonia and assisted Vieillard in the exploration of the island.
