Abstract The buffering effect of green spaces on mental health decline during the COVID-19 pandemic has been discussed in more than 1,000 scientific papers. As Singapore steps out of the pandemic, we move into the outdoors with stepped-up biodiversity and greenery—a result of nature intensification under our City in Nature vision. Besides intensifying the quantum of nature, the National Parks Board is looking into the area of landscape quality. One of its research studies, carried out in collaboration with medical professionals, found that exposure to landscapes with higher contemplative quality has a positive effect on mental well-being. The findings have been translated into the Design Guidelines for Contemplative Landscapes and discussed in this issue. We also celebrate outstanding urban greenery projects in two articles. The first presents projects that have been recognised by the Landscape Excellence Assessment Framework, while the second showcases greenery cultivated upwards as skyrise greenery. This issue features the work of social organisations: the Edible Garden City and Outdoor Sports Kakis which offer specially developed nature-based activities to bring benefits to target population groups. Lastly, academic writers share their views in this issue. Professor Hwang Yun Hye discusses the embracing of digital techniques and technologies in landscape architecture while Dr. Amy Wagenfeld proposes a web that unites landscape architecture and occupational therapy. |
