Description

Size Hindwing: 30 mm; Body length: 37 mm
Description Black thorax with two yellow lines on dorsum and distinct thin yellow bands on sides. Mature individuals have pruinescence on thorax, and obscuring markings. When viewed dorsally, shape of abdomen is characteristic; widens rather markedly from fifth segment and becomes thinner again towards apex, giving it a spear-shape. Abdominal segments 6 to 8 are bright right on top. Eyes are brown above and pale yellow below. Female has similar thoracic markings with a thinner and dark brown abdomen.

Ecology, Habitat & Location

Ecological Notes This is a predator, like most dragonflies and damselflies, catching small insects in flight. Found in swampy forests.
Habitats Forest, Freshwater, Freshwater Swamp Forest
Distribution In Singapore, it has been observed in MacRitchie Reservoir and Kent Ridge. Widespread from Bengal, Bangladesh and Thailand to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Conservation Notes It is rare and local in lowland swampy forests. There are several examples of such forest fully protected within Singapore's Nature Reserves.
