Ecological Notes | A canopy species preferring tall, mature trees of old secondary and freshwater swamp forests. This rather large woodpecker is one of our rarest birds. A maximum of five birds are known at present at Bukit Timah and Central Catchment Nature Reserves. |

Distribution | Restricted to the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. Recorded once (1994) from Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. Birds have also been recorded visiting outlying areas at Gymkhana Avenue and Mount Pleasant Road. The species occurs from western India, and from Korea through to Southeast Asia. |
