Description

Description Upperparts dark blue, underparts orange-rufous, under tail coverts white are characteristic features. Males have dark blue lores. Females have white lores and buffy orange throat.

Ecology, Habitat & Location

Ecological Notes A true mangrove species. It hunts in the sub-crown layer of the forest for insect prey. It is largely solitary but family flocks can be encountered during the breeding season. The clutch is usually two and the nest is constructed in low vegetation.

Distribution This species occurs in the Malay Peninsula, Greater Sunda islands, Sulawesi and Philippines. In Singapore, it is only known from mangroves on the northern coast of Pulau Tekong Besar. Doubtfully recorded from Pulau Ubin. Formerly present on the main island.

Trends & Threats Habitat loss and poaching.
Scientific Interest & Potential Value A good indicator for quality of mangrove habitat. Mosquitoes would be included in the diet. Has been known in the cagebird trade, against which protection is necessary.
Conservation Notes Population estimated at between 15-20 birds. The long term survival of this species is dependent on the conservation of the mangroves on the northern coast of Pulau Tekong Besar.
