Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a tree, up to 18 m tall.
Foliage Its opposite, stalked leaves have leathery leaf blades that are elliptic, and 4-15 cm long and 1-6.5 cm wide.
Flowers Its tiny, whitish flowers grow in clusters of 5-12.
Fruit Its round berries are green, ripening yellow to orange or red, and are 17 mm wide.
Habitat It grows in forests, from the lowlands up to 1,500 m altitude.
Associated Fauna Its fruits are eaten by birds.
Cultivation It can be propagated by seed.
Ethnobotanical Uses Edible Plant Parts : Edible Leaves
Food (Herb or Spice): A coffee substitute, made from a decoction of the leaves, was drunk in Peninsular Malaysia.
Timber & Products: The hard wood was shown to outlast chengal timber (Neobalanocarpus helmii) for guillotine machines.
