Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Erect herbaceous plant, able to grow up to about 2 - 6 m.
Foliage Hairy, ovate green leaves, measuring about 15 - 18 cm long by 5 - 10 cm wide, young foliage tend to dark reddish-green in colour.
Stems Young stems tend to be fragile and will need a structure for support.
Flowers Flowers measuring about 6 - 8 cm long and 2 - 4 cm wide, purple in colour and borne in clusters.
Etymology Genus Ruellia is named after John de la Ruelle of Soissons, who is the author of De natura plantarum (1536).
