Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Terrestrial orchid growing up to about 0.2-0.3 m tall.
Foliage Light green, pleated leaves are elliptic with wavy leaf margins (5-12 cm long, 4-6.3 cm wide).
Flowers Flowers are greenish white with narrow, linear petals. The lip is approximately rectangular with a fringed, bi-lobed tip and 2 bright purplish, longitudinal streaks. The inflorescence is 18-25 cm long and its stalk (peduncle) is 7 cm long. The flowers are widely spaced apart along the stalk.
Fruit Fruits are cylindrical pods (0.6-0.7 cm long) with small warts along the lines where it breaks open.
Habitat Often found in lowland freshwater swamps, but also occurs in montane habitats.
Etymology Greek liparoj, shining, referring to the shiny leaf texture. Latin barbata, with tufts of hair, or with a beard like a philosopher, referring to the toothed margins which look like hairs at the tip of the lip.
