Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a herbaceous plant growing up to 1m in height.
Foliage Leaves are ovate to lanceolate and occur in a paired (opposite) leaf arrangement. Leaf margin is finely toothed. The leaf surface and leaf stalks are covered in long white hairs. The leaf blades extends down to either side of the leaf stalk.
Flowers Small, compound flowers are composed of yellow ray florets. They lack floral stalks and are nestled in the leaf axils.
Fruit Dry, 1-seeded fruits are known as achenes.
Habitat Occurs along roadsides and waste lands at altitudes of 0 - 1200 m.
Cultivation This species is susceptible to mottle virus, yam nematode (Scutellonema bradys) and the fungus Corynespora cassiicola.
Ethnobotanical Uses Others: It contains insecticidal compounds that are effective against Leafworm (Spodoptera litura), a major agricultural pest that has acquired resistance to many synthetic pesticides. It can also be used as a cheaper alternative to commercial forms of rabbit fodder.
