Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Hybrid orchid formed by crossing Aranda Christine with Ascocenda Cholburi.
Foliage Long, leathery leaves are densely arranged in two opposite files along the stem, reaching from the base to the top of the plant. Leaf edges are turned slightly upwards in a boat-like shape.
Flowers The inflorescence is about 45-50 cm tall and composed of 12-17 flowers. Each flower is about 9.5 cm high and 8.5 cm wide.
Cultivation Cultivation requirements are similar to that of aranda orchids.
Etymology The genus Mokara was named after C.Y. Mok, a Singaporean who was the first to register a Mokara hybrid.  
Ethnobotanical Uses Cut - Dried Flower: Aside from dendrobiums, mokaras are one of the most popular cut flowers. In the 1990s, it was an important component of Singapore's orchid exports.
