Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Perennial herb with a climbing growth habit.
Foliage Leaves are approximately triangular with 3 distinct lobes. The terminal lobe is about 3 times larges than the lateral lobes. Leaf margin is irregularly toothed.
Flowers Male and female flowers are small and yellow. Male flowers occur in clusters, while female flowers occur singly.
Fruit Fruits are round berries (1 to 1.5 cm wide). They are initially light green striped with cream, but turn bright red at maturity.
Habitat Occurs in mountains, grasslands and near rivers.
Ethnobotanical Uses Medicinal: A seed decoction is used to treat flatulence. Seeds are also chewed to relieve toothache pain. Leaves and young shoots are consumed as a mild laxative.
