Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a fern with short-creeping underground stem (rhizome) that is densely bristly at its apex.
Foliage Its simple, entire leaves (fronds) are lance-shaped, closely spaced, and 30 cm by 6-12 cm. Its leaf veins are simple or once forked, uniting only near leaf margin to form one or two series of submarginal areoles (a small area of lamina enclosed by veins).
Reproductive Parts - non-flowering plant The much elongated exindusiate (not protected by a membrane) sori are found along the leaf veins. The fertile materials form near midrib to where the veins start to unite. Sterile hairs (paraphyses) with many red enlarged apical cells are usually present among the sporangia.
Habitat It grows at wet places in lowland primitive forests, on rocks by streams and in fresh water swamp forests.
Taxonomy Previous name of Syngramma alismifolia auct. non (C.Presl) J.Sm. was misused in Singapore. Current name of Syngramma wallichii (Hook.) Bedd. is applicable to wild plants in Singapore but not necessarily to wild plants elsewhere or to cultivated plants originating elsewhere.
Cultivation It can be propagated by spores.
Etymology The genus Syngramma comes from a Greek word that likely refers to submarginal veins that run parallel with the leaf margin.
