Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form A compact, low-growing shrub able to grow up to 2 - 5 m tall.
Foliage The leaves are green with an entire margin, an acuminate apex and a conspicuous midrib. The petioles are pink in colour. The young leaves are red in colour. 
Etymology Species smithii is named after James Edward Smith (1759 - 1828) who was an English botanist.
