Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Stoloniferous herbaceous plant, with short stems and growing up to about 10 - 20 m high.
Roots Presence of stolons (runners) which spreads out and form new plantlets at the tip.
Foliage A basal rosette of compound leaves with 3 toothed leaflets, green to dark green in colour. 
Flowers 5-petalled white flowers measuring about 2 - 2.5 cm across and with a yellow conical receptacle.
Fruit Not a true berry, the red fleshy edible part is a multiple (aggregate accessory) fruit with many achenes and receptacle tissue.
Others - Plant Morphology This hybrid species is the product of crossing several wild strawberry species over many years.
Cultivation Strawberries are not well-suited to the tropical, humid weather of Singapore and likely will not grow as big as the imported ones found in the supermarket. However, it has been grown successfully indoors without air-conditioning near a sunny window. Plants are self-pollinating; hand-pollinate with a paintbrush for optimal results.
Etymology Genus Fragaria means "fragrance" and refers to the fruit.
