Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Sympodial bamboo with erect culms up to 20 m tall.
Foliage Lanceolate leaves have a petiole-like connection to the culm and a hairy underside.
Stems Woody, hollow culms (6-12 cm wide) are smooth and cylindrical. The rhizomes (underground horizontal stems) are short.
Flowers Compound inflorescence is known as a synflorescence. Lanceolate spikelets are each made up of 4-5 fertile florets.
Fruit The fruit is a grain with a hairy tip.
