Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a palm which can reach up to 15 m tall. It often has a solitary habit, but can sometimes develop clustering habit too.
Foliage Leaves are feather-shaped (pinnate), and can reach up to 1.5 - 4.5 m long. Young leaves emerge red and gradually turn green as they mature. Leaf stalk is 20 - 75 cm long and deeply channelled. Each leaf has 14 - 37 leaflets on each side. Leaflets are linear, about 60 - 90 cm long and 3 - 8 cm wide.
Flowers Inflorescence is pendulous and comprises of many small flowers. Flowers are cream to green.
Fruit Fruit is globular to ellipsoid, about 1.5 - 4.2 cm long and 1 - 2.6 cm wide. They turn red when ripe. Each fruit contains one seed within.
Habitat It is found in rainforest, up to 2000 m altitude.
Etymology The species epithet commemorates Count Luigi Maria D'Albertis (1841- 1901), an Italian zoologist, ethnologist, and explorer who collected the type specimen of this species.
Ethnobotanical Uses Others: It can be used as a betel nut substitute.
