Botanical art and botanical illustration emphasise the scientific accuracy of the subject depicted. The botanical artist is required to have a good understanding of plant form and be able to make meticulous observations of the plant being illustrated, frequently under the guidance of a botanist.
The Singapore Botanic Gardens 2020 calendar features botanical watercolours by artists Chan York Chye, Charles de Alwis, D.N. Choudhury and Juraimi bin Samsuri. These artworks are part of the Gardens’ archives which include over 2,000 illustrations and paintings. A selection of pieces from this collection of botanical art, both old and modern,
is showcased in the Inverturret – Botanical Art Gallery.
