Description

Size 30 cm
Description Distinctly larger than other Calidris species. relatively long black bill slightly decurved at tip; legs dark green. Breeding: upperparts light brown with conspicuous chestnut patches on scapulars; underparts white with distinctive heavy black bars or spots on neck, breast and flanks, often forming breast-band. Non-breeding: blackish marks on sides of breast more distinct than Red Knot’s; faint breast-band formed by narrow streaks.

Ecology, Habitat & Location

Habitats Mudflats, Sandy Shore
Distribution Breeds in Northeast Siberia, Mongolia, North China, and winters in Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, New Guinea, Australia. An uncommon winter visitor and passage migrant to Singapore and Sungei Buloh. Eight birds were present at Sungei Buloh in November 2008.
