| Family Name: | Theraphosidae |
| Taxonomic Group: | Invertebrates (Spider) |
| Common Name: | Singapore Brown Tarantula |
Name
Ecology, Habitat & Location
| Ecological Notes | C. valida lives in burrows in undisturbed forests, feeding on large insects. |
|---|---|
| Habitats | Forest, Terrestrial |
| Distribution | This species was recorded in Singapore, Malaysia, and “East Indies” (presumably Indonesia) by Abraham (1924). One of the specimens from Singapore examined by Abraham was collected in 1900 from an unspecified location, the other in 1918 from the Singapore Botanic Gardens. This species has not been recorded from Singapore since Abraham’s report, although it is apparently still common in Malaysia, including Penang. |
Conservation
| Trends & Threats | Forest clearance and possibly poaching. |
|---|---|
| Scientific Interest & Potential Value | Theraphosids (commonly known as "tarantulas" or "bird-eating spiders) include some of the largest mygalomorph spiders. |
| Conservation Notes | Along with C. valida, we can no longer find some of the larger mygalomorph spiders that were previously recorded from Singapore. They include Lampropelma violaceopes (Family Theraphosidae), Haplopelma robustum, (Theraphosidae), Calommata sundaica (Atypidae) and Macrothele fulginea (Hexathelidae). While there is no evidence of blatant poaching of these spiders in Singapore for the international pet trade, it is still necessary to maintain constant vigilance against poachers in our nature reserves, quite apart from preserving the pristine conditions of their natural habitat, mainly in what remains of our primary rainforest |
