Description

Size Hindwing: 34 - 36 mm; Total Body Length: 40 - 44 mm
Description Abdominal segments blue, black and red. Eyes yellow, brown on top. Wings long, narrow and dark-tipped. Thorax dark dark metallic green, with three yellow stripes on each side. Females slightly larger than males, dorsal surface of abdominal segments 1 - 6 has thin, yellow markings, and abdominal segment 7 (and segment 6 in some female individuals) is entirely dull orange or yellow above. These become red upon maturation. In males, abdominal segments 6 and 7 are orangey when immature, becoming red in mature individuals.

Ecology, Habitat & Location

Ecological Notes Often found around leafy ponds of swampy forests. Males can be observed perching on twigs of extended periods of time. Males guard females during oviposition (often above a puddle of stagnant water) by hovering or perching on a twig close by.
