Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Short, herbaceous plant with an erect growth habit.
Foliage Leaves are elliptic with entire leaf margin and have short petioles (leaf stalks). Leaf arrangement is opposite with leaves occurring in pairs.
Stems Thin, herbaceous stems are greenish purple.
Flowers Purple flowers (2 cm wide) are arranged in paniculate racemes. Flower buds are light green.
Fruit Dry fruits resemble upside-down cellos.
Habitat Occurs on the forest floor on limestone slopes.
Similar This species is sometimes confused with Asystasia chelonoides Nees.
