Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Herbaceous plants about 3 m tall.
Foliage Leaves are bright green, oblong to lanceolate, measuring about 100 cm long and 30 cm wide.
Stems The stem is a pseudostem, formed by tightly packed leaf sheathes.
Flowers The inflorescence is erect, consisting of small yellow flowers and scarlet colored bracts that each has a greenish-yellow tip.
Fruit The fruit is cylindrical and thin.
Cultivation Plants do well in full sun to partial shade, with moist but well-drained, fertile soils. The plant is suitable for container-growing and need protection from winds. Give ample spacing between plants so that the leaves have space to spread out gracefully. Plants can be propagated by seeds or by dividing suckers.
Etymology The species is named after an Italian naturalist Odoardo Beccari (1843-1920), who explored plants in Borneo.
