Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a small, sympodial and epiphytic orchid and can grow up to 20cm in length.
Foliage The leaves are strongly channelled, recurved and are alternately arranged along the rhizome.
Stems The rhizomes are covered with reddish-brown sheaths.
Flowers The solitary red flowers are borne at the leaf axils and are large for its genus. The sepals and petals are orange-red in colour while the column is white. The flower lip is very small as compared to the sepals and petals and is lanceolate in shape.
Habitat It is found growing in hills and mountains above an altitude of 1500m.
Cultivation This plant can be grown in a vase, with pine barks as its medium, or mounted on cork. This plant is sensitive to excessive watering, therefore ensure the substrate dry out completely before watering again. Ensure not to leave the plant dry for more than a day. If under hot sun, the plant may need water twice a day. Fertilizers can be provided once a week, however, ensure to avoid direct contact of fertilizer on plant root by watering the plants before applying fertilizer.
