Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Succulent forming mats.
Foliage Fleshy, grey or blue-green leaves are arranged in rosettes up to 7.5 cm wide. The 2.5 cm-long leaves have a truncated tip which is covered in tiny, pebble-like tubercles.
Flowers Yellow to orange, funnel-shaped flowers (2 cm wide) have numerous stamens and narrowly elongated petals.
Fruit The dry, dehiscent fruit is a brown capsule.
Cultivation It is best grown in a sandy, well-drained soil with little organic matter. Water and feed very sparingly, using only a dilute fertilizer to feed it on rare occasion. Plants begin to flower at 2 years of age.
