Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a woody climber.
Foliage Leaf is egg-shaped to lanceolate (6.5 – 13.9 cm long and 2.5 – 5.4 cm wide), papery to thinly leathery, and mostly hairless except for scattered hairs on the midrib. There are 7 – 11 pairs of secondary veins and tertiary veins are ladder-like (reticulate), which are prominent on the underside of the leaf. Petiole is 0.3 – 0.9 cm long and 0.14 – 0.2 cm wide.
Flowers Flowers occurs in cluster of 3 – 4 on a flowering stalk which resembles a recurved hook. Flowers are 1.5 – 2 cm long, comprises of 3 sepals, 3 outer petals and 3 inner petals. Sepals are ovate to triangular (0.2 – 0.5 mm long and 0.2 – 0.4 mm wide) with the tip slightly reflexed. Outer petals are flat and broadly triangular (1.2 – 1.6 cm long and 0.35 – 0.5 cm wide). Inner petals are linear (1 – 1.5 cm long and 0.2 cm wide). Both inner and outer petals are densely hairy except at the base (claw).
Fruit Fruit stalk is 1.4 – 1.7 cm long, often with 1 – 2 monocarps, which are elliptical (4.4 cm long and 3.1 cm wide), beaked (o.6mm long) and ripens red. Each monocarp has 2 seeds within.
