Name
Description
Size | 80 mm |
---|---|
Description | Gastropod mollusc with a dextrally coiled shell, the last whorl very wide and open, and with a series of more than a dozen small openings through the shell. |
Ecology, Habitat & Location
Ecological Notes | They inhabit wave-exposed intertidal rocky shores, and are often found singly, under rocks and in crevices, grazing on the algae that grow on the rocks. They are found in such habitat in the Singapore Straits, and are widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific. They never grow to the large sizes attained by commercial abalone species. |

Habitats | Coral Reef |
Distribution | Indian Ocean and West Pacific Ocean |
Conservation
Trends & Threats | The loss & degradation of natural rocky intertidal habitats on islands in the Singapore Straits. |
---|---|
Scientific Interest & Potential Value | Although not able to reach the sizes of it's counterparts living in Japan, Australia, New Zealand & Eastern Pacific, they are still equally palatable where mariculture of H. asinina is carried out in Thailand & the Philippines. |
Conservation Notes | Sufficient areas of rocky habitat with crevices and associated algal growth are required to support populations of the various abalones, including this species. Sea-walls are not a suitable alternative habitat. |
