Haliotis asinina Linnaeus, 1758
Family Name: | Haliotidae |
Taxonomic Group: | Invertebrates (Mollusc) |
Common Name: | Abalone |
Name
Ecology, Habitat & Location
Ecological Notes | All these species inhabit intertidal, wave-exposed rocky shores in the Singapore Strait, often singly under rocks and stones, where they graze on epilithic algae. |
---|---|
Habitats | Marine, Rocky Shore |
Distribution | Natural rocky shores on Southern Islands in the Singapore Strait. Widely distributed throughout the Indo-West Pacific. |
Conservation
Trends & Threats | Degradation and loss of natural rocky intertidal habitats on islands in the Singapore Strait. |
---|---|
Scientific Interest & Potential Value | Although tropical abalone species never reach the large sizes attained by their temperate counterparts living in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Eastern Pacific, they are nonetheless equally palatable. Mariculture of H. asinina is carried out in Thailand and the Philippines. |
Conservation Notes | Sufficient areas of “natural” rocky substratum and crevices with associated algal growth are needed to support any population of abalone. Seawalls do not appear to be a viable alternative habitat for this animal. |
