Description

Size 50 cm
Description Heavy-looking with huge conspicuous spatulate black bill. Male head black with green gloss; breast, side of vent and scapulars white; uppertail and undertail coverts black; flanks and belly chestnut. Female brown with dark brown markings.

Ecology, Habitat & Location

Habitats Mudflats
Distribution Found across northern hemisphere. The East Asian-Australasian population breeds in East Siberia and Northeast China; winters in East and Southeast Asia. Rare winter visitor and passage migrant. Increasing incidence through the 1980s. The latest record was one adult female photographed at Sungei Buloh in December 2008. Found in ponds, marshes, rivers and mudflats.
