Description

Description The adult is stocky with a thick neck, short bill and legs; deep rufous sides of head and neck; black crown and long crest; black streaks down foreneck and breast; chestnut brown upperparts and wing coverts with fine black vermiculations. The belly and vent are marked with black and white, blue/blue-green facial skin, yellow-green legs and feet. The juvenile is duller than adult with irregular dense white-buff grey bars and vermiculations; blacker crown and nape with more visible white markings, white throat with a broken dark mesial streak. When in flight, the juvenile shows more contrast between upperwing coverts and flight feathers. 

Ecology, Habitat & Location

Ecological Notes Breeds from May to August in India. Nests in a flimsy platform in a tree typically 5-8m above ground. Clutches have 3-5 blue-tinged white eggs.
