Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form Large, erect herb up to 1.5 m tall.
Foliage Large, oval-shaped leaves are light green with white to light green midrib. They are held erect by a long petiole (leaf stalk).
Stems It has underground, horizontal stems known as rhizomes.
Flowers The inflorescence resembles a single, large, star-shaped flower (7.5 cm wide). It is composed of white to pinkish, lance-shaped bracts that look like petals and inconspicuous, small, white flowers. They are borne on a long stalk and held above the foliage.
Cultivation This low maintenance plant grows best in consistently moist, but well-drained soils. Full sun will cause the leaves to scorch.
