Description and Ethnobotany

Foliage Shiny, green leaves are ovate to triangular with an irregular, undulate leaf margin.
Stems The stem is lined with yellow spines which are long and hooked.
Flowers Purple, star-shaped flowers are arranged singly or in pairs in the leaf axils.
Fruit Small, round berries are initially dark green, turning white and then purplish black at maturity. The fruit hangs down from a long stalk which connects it to the stem.
